Propulsion 2016 is a choreographic platform for NTU dancers to push their dancing to the next level through intense interactions with experienced dance artists actively working in the contemporary dance scene in Singapore.
NTU Contempminated presents Propulsion 2016 the annual dance production at Goodman Arts Centre presenting new dance works by guest choreographers Ezekiel Oliveira, Zhuo Zihao, Hong Guofeng and Jeryl Lee.
For this occasion, Propulsion 2016 Ezekiel is presenting Savages, following the horrendous attack in the gay nightclub in Orlando in June 2016, a direct attack in the heart of the gay community.
“I felt obliged to speak of a community that has provided me with warmth and love – a discovery of myself across the last 17 years. The gay nightclub is of an overwhelming importance still today, once a safe space for one to be whoever he desires to be, free of prejudice and embedded in loud music and love. I cried all day, after this hideous attack on human rights. Across the world, media outlets insisted on blinding audiences – reporting the latter as a terrorist attack, rather than what actually happened. A direct attack on the gay community, it feels like a knife stabbed through my back, my soul slowly drowned in sorrow and hate. Savages is a literal dance piece, explored from a single common denominator; dance. From dance I created and expression of love, that is silenced at times by its contextual circumstances. Savages are my angry reaction to the people that still refuse to see this mass murder in the gay community as a hate crime. “
