Leap 2017 Pulse Program is inspiring young dancers to ditch ballet shapes and reuse tutus in grounded and distinct bold choreography.
Presenting seven different dance pieces choreographed by Frontier Danceland dance artists we are delighted with a variety of styles of dance and choreography that reminds one and all of the beginnings of Modern dance.
‘Lost World’ by Adelene Stanley is a precise-fast-tight unison danced to Moonlight Sonata by Ludwig van Beethoven – a big undertaking for this youthful group of dancers, trading Graham inspired dance material achieving great musicality and a dramatic performance standing out during this evening of contemporary dance.
In ‘Nowhere in the dark’, Joy Wang examines floor patterns and exhaustion in movement, through repetition the dancers explore layered choreography and resistance on a challenge of endurance and stamina.
Leap 2017 declares itself has a great circle of talented dancers working on the fringes of dance in Singapore. Having followed the company for three years, I have never been so convinced that the landscape of contemporary dance is changing with a young group of well trained, engaging and original dance artists.
Adrian Skjoldborg choreography is a vision in white with weightless unison and critical sensibilities. In here, the dancers search for the smallest detail in movement, celebrating the tiniest articulations of the wrists creating distance between their bodies and the movement at the periphery, still infused with some ballet movement this piece is just beautiful to watch.
Concluding the night, Daniel Navarro Lorenzo presents ‘Idilio’ surprising the audience from the outset with imposing determination. The cast of dancers conquers the floor in a sharp line downstage holding off the vibrations of the soundscape inside their bodies. The latter replicates throughout the piece with razor-sharp precision Lisa Chearles Ming Huey undertakes the choreography with an animalistic approach bringing the audience to a genuine cheer and delight.
