Ezekiel Oliveira, Founder of FiveLines – A Contemporary Dance Initiative.
Ezekiel Oliveira is originally from Portugal where he studied new circus and contemporary dance. He graduated from London Contemporary Dance School in 2007 and has performed extensively in the U.K and Europe in works by Tamzin Fitzgerald, Hofesh Schechter, Stephan Koplowitz, Balbir Singh and Fleur Darkin, amongst others.
Ezekiel created FiveLines – A Contemporary Dance Initiative in 2015, a digital publication for dance in Singapore, debating and promoting the intersections of contemporary dance, theatre and ballet. To date, he has interviewed international choreographers from all corners of the world, as well as dancers visiting the region. He is interested in understanding where dance is going next, as well as supporting venues and dance companies to reach a broad and new audience for dance through comprehensive marketing campaigns.
Ezekiel was an adjunct-lecturer at NAFA (Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts) 2015-2019 teaching contact improvisation, floor work technique and choreography. He has a particular interest in training dancers for repertoire companies. He is delighted to see his students working for all the mains dance companies in Singapore and China, as well as thriving in the independent dance scene in South East Asia.
Dance training has taken him to teach professional dance classes for a wide variety of dance companies, as well as intensives/workshops at dance festivals. Ezekiel has been dancing Contact Improvisation for over 15 years.
As a choreographer, he created Skin – A Choreographic Response for Singapore Art Museum (2016). Vent for Maya Dance Theatre (2016) ONWARDS for CROSSINGS (2016), Punch Me for da:ns festival with NAFA (2017), Blitz for CROSSINGS (2018) and Amek Gambar – A Choreographic Response for the Peranakan Museum (2018).
Alongside his choreographic work, Ezekiel has been devoting a large part of his time working as a dance critic: documenting and reviewing dance performances in Singapore.
